What Is Kolab?

Kolab is a comprehensive and flexible solution for workgroups. Email, contacts and group appointments are managed at leisure by both Windows/Outlook and Linux/KDE. No permanent network connection is necessary; as soon as you are online again, your mailbox is synchronized with the server.

The integrated Email encryption Ägypten-2 is an official recommendation for government use in Germany, according to Sphinx (V-PKI).

Seen from an administrator's perspective, Kolab offers particularly a differential data backup which makes possible to easily restore individual objects. At the same time, the Kolab concept provides high scalability and performance. A directory service, virus filter, and other components are already integrated.

Already as a mere Email server, Kolab serves all usual mail clients and simplifies, in addition to its more flexible backup/recovery mechanism, the user management and the configuration of the server components by means of the Kolab web interface.

The Kolab server, as well as the KDE client Kontact are Free Software, licensed under the GNU General public License. The full compatibility with the Outlook plugin Toltec Connector is ensured by means of a jointly developed XML storage format for Outlook and Kontact.
